About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. The role ensures school personnel, students, and the public have an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities. Responsibilities include daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining adequate supply inventories. The position oversees and participates in all facets of custodial work.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Plan and coordinate daily custodial tasks; delegate tasks to custodial personnel; monitor and inspect work for compliance with assignments.
• Provide training and instruction to custodial personnel, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards for safe use and application of chemical supplies.
• Perform daily opening and securing of assigned school facility, including unlocking doors, inspecting grounds and facilities for hazards, and managing lighting and security systems.
• Monitor materials inventory and supply levels; order new stock according to established policies; coordinate custodial equipment service and repair.
• Operate electrical cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers) safely and productively.
• Use appropriate chemicals and cleaners according to instructions and state regulatory standards to ensure safety.
• Perform custodial tasks such as emptying waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents and walls.
• Perform sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchens, food areas, and cafeterias.
• Perform physically demanding tasks, including mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
• Respond to emergency situations to resolve or prevent hazardous conditions (e.g., spills, broken windows, broken locks).
• Move furniture and equipment as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness of equipment, tools, and storage areas; report malfunctions and facility maintenance needs.
• Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment (e.g., changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, buffer machine pads).
• Assist in general facility maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, filling dispensers, and setting up for meetings/conferences.
• Lead custodial crews in major projects, such as seasonal facility preparations or floor stripping and waxing.
• Stay updated on current technology used by OCPS; attend training to maintain required skill levels.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Up to two (2) years of successful custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Custodian certification from the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one (1) year of hire. OCPS provides training for this certification.
• New hires must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying objects (20-50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds).
• Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive and discriminate odors, depths, and visual details; oral communication ability may be required.
• Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to adverse conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature extremes, noise, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.
