About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school. The role ensures school personnel, students, and the public have an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities. Responsibilities include daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining adequate supply inventories. The position oversees and participates in all facets of custodial work.

Responsibilities

• Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Plans and coordinates daily custodial tasks; delegates tasks to custodial personnel; monitors and inspects work for compliance with assignments.
• Provides training and instruction to custodial personnel, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards for safe chemical use.
• Performs daily opening and securing of assigned school facility, including unlocking doors, inspecting grounds, and managing lighting/security systems.
• Monitors materials inventory and supply levels; orders new stock and coordinates equipment service/repair as needed.
• Uses electrical cleaning equipment (e.g., vacuum cleaners, buffers, shampoo machines) and applies chemicals safely per regulatory standards.
• Performs custodial tasks such as emptying waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting, cleaning vents/fans, and sanitizing restrooms, kitchens, and cafeterias.
• Handles physically demanding tasks like mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
• Responds to emergencies (e.g., spills, broken windows) to prevent hazardous conditions.
• Moves furniture and equipment; cleans tools and maintains storage areas; reports malfunctions and maintenance needs.
• Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment (e.g., changing vacuum belts/bags, buffer pads).
• Assists in non-cleaning tasks like changing light bulbs, filling dispensers, and setting up for meetings.
• Leads crews in major projects (e.g., seasonal preparations, floor stripping/waxing).
• Stays updated on current technology used by OCPS and attends relevant training.
• Maintains timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Up to two years of custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or equivalent combination of education/training.
• Must obtain Custodian certification from the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one year of hire (OCPS provides training).
• New hires must pass the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS) (effective March 19, 2007).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and lifting/carrying objects (20–50 lbs, occasionally up to 100 lbs).
• Sensory Requirements: Tasks require visual perception, depth discrimination, odor detection, and oral communication.
• Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to strong odors, fumes, dust, humidity, temperature extremes, noise, machinery, and potentially hazardous substances (e.g., chemicals, pathogens).
