About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader master for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this role are responsible for monitoring, training, assigning, reviewing, planning, and coordinating the work of crew leaders who oversee custodial crews. Key responsibilities include training crew leaders and custodians, developing cleaning schedules, inspecting facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining supply inventories.

Responsibilities

• Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Coordinates and plans the work of custodial crew leaders; delegates tasks to custodial personnel; monitors and inspects custodial work for compliance with assignments.
• Provides training and instruction to custodial personnel when weaknesses are observed; ensures compliance with OSHA standards for safe use and application of chemical supplies.
• Inspects grounds and facilities for hazardous conditions and assigned zones for proper cleaning and sanitizing.
• Monitors materials inventory and supply levels; orders new stock according to established policies; coordinates custodial equipment service and/or repair as needed.
• Monitors and maintains the custodial budget within the facility.
• Directs and assigns custodial crews in major custodial projects, such as seasonal facility preparations or floor stripping and waxing.
• Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and state regulatory standards to ensure safety.
• Performs sanitizing tasks in various facility areas, such as restrooms, kitchens, food areas, cafeterias, and other custodial tasks as needed.
• Performs physically demanding tasks, including mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
• Responds to emergency situations to resolve or prevent hazardous conditions, such as spills, broken windows, or broken locks.
• Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs.
• Moves furniture and other equipment as necessary.
• Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags or buffer machine pads.
• Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, and assisting in setting up for meetings/conferences.
• Keeps up to date on current technology relevant to the role and attends training to maintain required skill levels.
• Ensures timely and accurate information management as part of job responsibilities.

Marginal Functions

• Performs additional custodial tasks, such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents, fans, and walls.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least five (5) years of successful custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Master Custodian certification from the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one (1) year of obtaining this position.
• Effective March 19, 2007, all new hires must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents without a break in service are exempt.

• Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and calculate decimals and percentages.
• Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions in various forms, and exercise independent judgment to adapt methods and standards to meet objectives.
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 20-50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds).
• Sensory Requirements: Tasks may require the ability to perceive and discriminate odors, depths, and oral communications; most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
• Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to strong odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.
