About the Role

Under direction, this position functions as a crew leader master for custodial personnel engaged in highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this role are responsible for monitoring, training, assigning, reviewing, planning, and coordinating the work of crew leaders who oversee custodial crews. Key responsibilities include training crew leaders and custodians, developing cleaning schedules, inspecting facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and maintaining supply inventories.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Coordinate and plan the work of custodial crew leaders; delegate tasks to custodial personnel; monitor and inspect custodial work for compliance with assignments.
• Provide training and instruction to custodial personnel when weaknesses are observed; ensure compliance with OSHA standards for safe use and application of chemical supplies.
• Inspect grounds and facilities for hazardous conditions and assigned zones for proper cleaning and sanitizing.
• Monitor materials inventory and supply levels; order new stock according to established policies; coordinate custodial equipment service and/or repair as needed.
• Monitor and maintain the custodial budget within the facility.
• Direct and assign custodial crews in major custodial projects, such as seasonal facility preparations or floor stripping and waxing.
• Use appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and state regulatory standards to ensure personal, student, public, and staff safety.
• Perform sanitizing tasks in various facility areas, such as restrooms, kitchens, food areas, and cafeterias, as well as other custodial tasks as needed.
• Perform physically demanding tasks requiring the use of heavy custodial equipment, such as mopping, stripping, waxing, and floor buffing.
• Respond to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions, such as spills, broken windows, or broken locks.
• Notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs.
• Move furniture and other equipment as necessary.
• Perform routine maintenance on facility custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, and changing buffer machine pads.
• Perform non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance, such as changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, and assisting in setting up for meetings/conferences.
• Keep up to date on current technology relevant to the job; attend training to ensure required skill levels.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Marginal Functions

• Perform custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents, fans, and walls.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least five (5) years of previous successful custodial work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must obtain Master Custodian certification issued by the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one (1) year of obtaining this position. OCPS provides training classes for this certification.
• Effective March 19, 2007, all new hires must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Ability

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects (20-50 pounds), occasionally up to 100 pounds.

Sensory Requirements

• Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate odors and depths.
• Some tasks require oral communication ability.
• Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dust, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances, and toxic/poisonous agents.
