About the Role

Under general supervision, teaches and instructs pupils in culturally appropriate academic, social, behavioral, and other educational skill areas. Actively participates in learning the Muckleshoot culture, language, customs, and traditions to support the goals and objectives of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe for the Muckleshoot Tribal School.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements an instructional program based on approved CTE frameworks, designed to meet individual student needs/interests and whole groups, including at-risk or special needs students. Prepares lesson plans aligned with state standards.
  • Collaborates with staff and the Muckleshoot community to develop new culturally appropriate programs with curriculum objectives/goals aligned with state standards and the vision for the Muckleshoot Tribal School.
  • Establishes and implements reasonable and culturally appropriate classroom rules and procedures; provides guidance, counseling, and discipline to encourage student achievement and conduct.
  • Monitors student learning and behavior regularly and seeks administrative assistance when appropriate.
  • Confers with students, parents/guardians, and staff to provide guidance, evaluation, and to modify assignments or expectations as needed.
  • Creates a classroom conducive to learning, establishes goals/objectives in conformance with state and tribal school regulations, and evaluates student progress.
  • Collects and interprets data for administrative purposes, state testing, and compliance with state and federal accountability requirements.
  • Teaches in culturally appropriate ways to enhance and support Muckleshoot and Native American student success.
  • Maintains up-to-date daily schedules, lesson plans, attendance records, and grade records both electronically and in written format.
  • Attends and participates in required staff meetings and serves on at least one committee as deemed necessary.
  • Directs the activities of assigned non-certified personnel, para-professionals, and volunteers.
  • Prepares substitute plans including projects, schedules, routines, class lists, attendance forms, and other needed resources.
  • Actively maintains parent contact through newsletters, phone calls, field trips, classroom involvement, awards, conferences, home visits, and community events.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in a related field or experience in education.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain teaching certification with OSPI, including appropriate CTE endorsements and/or a Washington State teaching certificate.
  • Knowledge of subject areas appropriate to assignment.
  • Experience and sensitivity toward Native American education issues and the ability to work effectively in the Muckleshoot tribal community.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license required at the time of appointment or as set by the Tribe.

Skills

  • Effective behavior management techniques and knowledge of rules/procedures for student safety.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications.
  • Effective communication with students, parents/guardians, staff, and administrators.
  • Designing and implementing lesson plans for students with a wide range of achievement levels.
  • Organizing activities appropriate to the maturity and attention span of assigned students.
  • Providing instruction and demonstrating techniques.
  • Managing student behavior and handling confidential matters professionally.
  • Willingness to participate in job-related training, in-service days, conferences, and scheduled meetings.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. Occasionally required to sit; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
