Cryogenic Design Engineer

Role and Responsibilities

• Work as part of a team on the design and optimization of components and systems operating in cryogenic environments in support of IBM's quantum computing hardware.
• May include mechanical design, thermal and structural FEA, working with manufacturing companies to fabricate and assemble hardware, and working with internal teams on integration of cryogenic systems.

Education and Technical Expertise

• Master's Degree Required
• Computer-aided design of mechanical components.
• Structural and thermal finite-element analysis.
• Thermal and mechanical properties of materials at cryogenic temperatures.
• Design of components for operation in cryogenic environments.
• Documentation of designs and analysis projects through assembly drawings, bills of materials, procedures, and similar documents.

Technical and Professional Experience

• Computer-aided design using Solidworks.
• Experience with design of components for operation at
• Packing design for semiconductor devices, especially for cryogenic operation.
• CFD and/or fluid properties at cryogenic temperatures.
• Mechanical design and integration of wiring harnesses and related components.
• Operation of cryogenic equipment, especially mechanical coolers and dilution refrigerators.
