Crude Oil Accountant
Basic Function
The Crude Oil Accountant reviews and interprets commercial contracts, prepares and confirms wire transfer and payment requests, verifies crude oil volumes and prices, prepares journal entries and inventory adjustments, assists in processing transactions, analyzes crude oil pipeline/rail/truck reports, and performs account reconciliations.
Job Duties
- Reviews and interprets commercial contracts and exercises sound judgment in determining the appropriate accounting treatment
- Prepare and confirm a variety of wire transfer and payment requests
- Verify crude oil volumes and prices with external customers and suppliers
- Prepares journal entries and inventory adjustments as needed and performs account reconciliations
- Prepares reconciliations of perpetual inventory (receipts, deliveries and balances) to pipeline or terminal shipper statements and refinery receipts
- Affords assistance in processing transactions and reports
- Analyzes crude oil pipeline/rail/truck reports and works crude oil schedulers to ensure completeness and accuracy of crude movement transactions in the accounting system
- Researches discrepancies and performs root cause analysis
- Makes measurements and tracks estimated vs. actual vs. scheduled volumes
- Affords assistance in special projects and research tasks involving best practices and process improvements
- Performs inventory valuations
Other Duties
- May create, maintain, and perform a variety of reports/spreadsheets for royalty tax, inventory, pipeline commitments and other related materials
- May perform lease crude specific duties consisting of severance tax reporting, royalty payments and reporting, update and verification of pricing and tax rates and reconciliation of lease payables sub ledger to the general ledger
- May submit, track and analyze master file additions, changes
Experience
None typically required, but one year of job experience may be required, depending on location.
Education Level
A broad understanding of accounting practices and procedures is required.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform basic to moderate accounting analysis and mathematical calculations
- Exercises sound judgement to identify, troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day technical and process problems
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both written and verbal
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Experience with accounting software
- Ability to utilize analytical skills to understand and explain crude movements
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner and establish effective working relationships with internal operations and external customers
- Demonstrate an aptitude for quick learning, as well as ability to problem solve outstanding issues by working with various departments and external parties
Preferred Skills
- Experience with SAP FI/CO, BI Reporting accounting software
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
None typically required, but may be assigned special assignments projects or tasks by their supervisor.
