CROSSING GUARDS

About the role

The crossing guard(s) are needed at various sites within the Lucia Mar Unified School District. The positions are available on student days only, Monday through Friday, with shifts varying in duration.

Responsibilities

• Directs children during the access and egress of the school grounds;
• Ensures their safety during the process;
• Directs and monitors a safe flow of traffic in and around the drop-off/pick-up zones;
• Maintains order in the zones for drop-off and pick-up before and after school;
• Safely directs vehicular traffic and pedestrians around any hazards;
• Reports behavioral problems to the principal.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or its equivalent;
• Able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions;
• Able to prioritize tasks;
• Able to direct children and adults in an effective and courteous manner;
• Knowledge of traffic laws appropriate to school zones;
• Previous experience working with children, preferably in a school setting (desirable);
• Valid California driver's license.

Essential Job Functions

• Ability to see with or without vision aids, including accurate peripheral vision and distance vision;
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time;
• Ability to stoop, twist, bend over, grasp, reach overhead, push, pull, and move, lift and/or carry up to 15 pounds to waist height;
• Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels;
• Ability to speak English so that others may understand at normal levels;
• Ability to work in a hectic environment and maintain composure in stressful situations;
• Ability to interact daily in person with other members of the school staff, children, and parents;
• Ability to demonstrate comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
