Seasonal position assisting children in crossing streets safely during school arrival and dismissal times.
Responsibilities
- Prepare crossing zone and assist children in crossing streets safely, watching traffic closely and stopping cars if necessary.
- Escort children across the street twice daily—once when arriving at school and once when departing.
- Serve as a liaison between children, parents, school administrators, and the P.T.A.
- Participate in special events as requested by school administrators and/or the P.T.A.
- Perform physical activities as needed, including regular use of a hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, and cones.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of current Michigan traffic laws, emergency procedures, and proper use of the English language.
- Moderate responsibility for the care and use of materials, equipment, and tools.
- Great responsibility for exercising discretion and independent judgment in safely crossing children.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and spelling.
- Ability to work effectively with children, parents, and school employees.
- Ability to accurately judge traffic flow, speed, and direction of travel.
- Ability to prioritize activities and work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, using hands to handle objects, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing (in quiet or noisy environments), and occasionally lifting/moving up to 40 pounds.
- Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work environment is usually loud to moderate.
- Mental functions include comparing, analyzing, communicating (orally and in writing), copying, coordinating, instructing, computing, synthesizing, evaluating, interpersonal skills, compiling, and negotiating.
