Job Summary

Reporting to the SVP/Chief Nursing Officer or Designee and the Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the APP serves as a key clinical provider and team member in the treatment and management of Intensive Care Unit patients. They practice under the direction of the Medical Director of the ICU and other Intensivists in a manner consistent with both the Massachusetts Board and hospital policy. The APP works collaboratively with surgeons and/or Hospitalists on the medical-surgical floor.

Essential Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the physician completes pre-admission history and physical examination.
  • Ensures that all requisite testing is completed.
  • Collaborates with the physician to develop and implement the treatment plan.
  • Affirms patient progress through ongoing assessments and documentation.
  • Consults with appropriate resources as needed.
  • Reviews and interprets results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as insertion or removal of central venous lines, nasogastric tubes, arterial lines, bladder catheterization, phlebotomy, and IV insertion, and performs electrocardiograms.
  • Makes daily rounds on patients alone and/or with the intensivist or surgical team, reporting findings to the attending physician.
  • Places orders in the EMR.
  • Prepares patients for discharge and completes documentation.
  • Participates in discharge conferences as appropriate.
  • Completes patient care referrals and coordinates care as necessary.
  • Participates in the quality improvement/quality assurance program.
  • Communicates patient hospital summaries directly to referring physicians.
  • Educates, instructs, and counsels patients and families.
  • Provides psychological, emotional, and informational support to patients and families.
  • Communicates patients' needs to appropriate team members.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with all levels of personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in any field of study and completion of either a 2-year PA or NP Program required.
  • Nurse Practitioner License required, or Registration Physician Assistant License required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate required.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam, and diagnostic data to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for patients in both elective and emergent situations.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in ICU setting.

  • Results: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s).
  • Physical Nature of the Job: Heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and requires extended periods of standing and/or moving.

Pay Range

$56.25 - $91.83 per hour. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, including seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
