Crisis Intervener

Location: Fairport, NY 14450 (Bird/Morgan School)
Term: 10-month, full-time position
Starting date: September 2026
Salary range: $33,252 – $52,269 per school year (actual salary dependent on education, experience, and contract)

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis intervention for students
• Positively interact with students and staff consistently
• Use verbal and non-verbal communication skills and behavior support techniques to manage aggressive behavior and defuse students in crisis
• Work collaboratively with team members to support all students in program assignments
• Attend Train the Trainer sessions to maintain current knowledge of behavior management
• Train staff on techniques to support student behaviors
• Attend team meetings as necessary
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

• Civil Service eligibility for Student Behavioral Assistant, meeting one of the following:
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college with an Associate’s degree (or completion of 60 college credits), OR
  • Two years of paid full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience involving the supervision, counseling, or instruction of students in a school, institution, or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation, or detention of children, OR
  • Two years of paid full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience in a role responsible for the protection of people or property (e.g., Police Officer, Security Specialist, Military Police), OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above
• Completion of TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) training (required)
• Experience working with students with disabilities (required); experience with students with autism (preferred)
• Working knowledge of conflict resolution
• Proactive team player and problem solver
• Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
• Proficiency in using technology effectively
• Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation), including:
  • Using approved physical intervention techniques when necessary
  • Lifting and/or carrying (potentially 50 lbs. or greater)
  • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and/or reaching
  • Walking, running, and/or escorting students in multiple settings

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Mental Health, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
