About the Role

Spire Alabama is seeking a Construction Crewman to work in the Selma, Alabama Operation Center. This position assists in the repair, installation, and maintenance of natural gas underground piping.

Responsibilities

  • Excavation of main or service pipe, trenches, or ditches.
  • Backfilling ditches and trenches.
  • Operating air tools and light-duty mechanical construction equipment.
  • Mixing and pouring concrete, broom finishing patches in streets, and making temporary repairs to pavement.
  • Performing maintenance work involved in pipe corrosion protection operations, such as applying green line, fiberglass, mastic, etc.
  • Preparing piping for repair and joining.
  • Performing tasks that require the use of respiratory protection equipment as encountered in live gas repairs.
  • Using locate equipment to locate piping for internal purposes.
  • Leading by example in support of the Company’s essential characteristics and values: strong ethics and integrity, dedication to a safe work environment, and commitment to a diverse workforce.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to acquire a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 120 days of the start date.
  • Capable of lifting up to 100 lbs. and carrying large fitting equipment and tools such as jackhammers, tapping machines, large valves, etc.
  • Ability to operate air tools, light-duty mechanical construction equipment, compressors, gasoline pumps, and excavating equipment.
  • Read, understand, and complete required reports and documentation associated with natural gas distribution facilities.
  • Utilize small tools and equipment to locate and determine the source of gas leaks and identify hazardous conditions.
  • Perform assigned duties in confined spaces and potentially hazardous conditions while using proper personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, goggles, steel toe boots, respirators).
  • Operate various sizes of motor vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and adapt in a fast-moving culture.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with a diverse array of people.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet individual goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and display a positive attitude in a dynamic environment.
  • Occasionally work on an on-call basis and respond to the designated service center within 30 minutes.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Outdoor work environment exposed to all weather conditions, construction areas with uneven surfaces, and loud audible noises.
  • Extensive time in the field, with exposure to heavy construction equipment, outdoor elements, and physical exertion.
  • Overtime and/or travel may be required.
