About the role

The Underground Crew Leader position is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. Key responsibilities include supervising crew members, troubleshooting underground circuits, and maintaining company vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground work.
  • Supervise crew members and lead training in safe and productive work procedures.
  • Troubleshoot problems on underground circuits and identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Identify and locate puller and tensioner setups, understand grounding procedures, and properly install and remove PPE and cover up.
  • Understand and apply ladder requirements, flag and tag procedures, and properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Plan safe work based on a job print or work order, and understand sloping and shoring requirements.
  • Operate equipment safely, test and classify soil, and understand how to safely operate equipment.
  • Comply with company reporting procedures and complete required paperwork.
  • Coordinate and inspect the work of crew members.

Requirements

  • Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Possess a CDL and demonstrate safe driving.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Willing to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Willing to work over-time when requested.
  • Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of leadership and management skills.
  • Familiarity with underground services, infrastructure, and duct banks.
  • Knowledge of tools for terminating cable and grounding procedures.
  • Understanding of induced voltage and how to obtain a one shot on a reclosure.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and properly phase out a line using phasing sticks.
  • Understanding of line protection devices and proper inspection of rubber goods and PPE.
  • Experience with flag and tag procedures and understanding of ladder requirements.
  • Ability to properly ask for and take line clearances.
  • Knowledge of sloping and shoring requirements.
