Crew Chief II

About the Role

We are seeking a Crew Chief II to join our growing Geospatial/SUE Division. This position requires candidates to be physically able to operate and maneuver truck equipment and the various tools utilized for underground utility exploration, designation, and survey locations. Day-to-day operations may involve primarily SUE activities with occasional survey tasks to collect field data. The ability to multitask is crucial to maintain workflow. Position will require travel, primarily within the office Geographic Region Location, and other states as needed.

Responsibilities

• Act as a crew leader working with multiple field crews and supervises SUE staff to complete projects safely, on schedule, and within scope.
• Direct SUE tasks in the field and lead tailgate safety meetings, developing site-specific Job Hazard Analysis.
• Develop and implement Maintenance of Traffic signage at each site.
• Communicate with clients, utility representatives, SUE, Survey, and CADD staff for SUE-related tasks.
• Perform QA/QC on designated utilities and test holes, and lead field investigations.
• Train lower-level SUE technicians on proper designating and test hole techniques.
• Secure equipment and guard against loss and theft.
• Read and interpret roadway plans, as-builts, and utility company markup records.
• Designate all utilities, including complex telecommunications, cable TV, gas, electric, water, traffic control, and others encountered in the field.
• Use multi-frequency pipe and cable locators, single-frequency induction devices (Metrotech 810, RD5000, Pipehorn), and operate GPR proficiently.
• Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on designating equipment.
• Adhere to safety standards and maintain truck and electronic equipment daily.
• Use air lance to expose utilities in varying soil conditions and depths, and operate a concrete saw and jackhammer on varying pavement types.
• Understand proper tamping procedures and patch asphalt and concrete correctly.
• Drive the designating vehicle and vacuum excavation truck, and perform minor repairs on the vac truck.
• Maintain equipment and keep the crew's assigned vehicle clean.
• Complete field sketches, record information for test holes, and record pole data.
• Maintain and operate a total station and/or GPS Unit, including the data collector associated with survey equipment.
• Follow WGI survey procedures for checking into established survey control when field locating SUE evidence.
• Complete QL-D linework and submit One Call tickets.
• Assist with proposal preparation, take-offs, and Project Managers as needed.
• Download and email data files, photographs, and field notes to the home office daily.
• Effectively communicate with all parties involved in a project to ensure SUE markings are adequately surveyed and accounted for.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 4-5+ years of experience with SUE, utility designating, and test holes.
• Valid Driver's license and clean MVR required.
• Full understanding of ASCE's SUE Quality levels.
• Supervisory experience and capable of working independently.
• Must be able to pass DOT physical with the ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card within 60 days.
• Ability to pass drug screen.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Physically able to operate heavy tools such as jackhammers and pogo tampers.
• Must enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
• Able to walk for long periods over all types of terrain.
• Must be able to travel for up to 2 weeks at a time.
• Technically and mechanically inclined, with good problem-solving abilities.
• Computer savvy and able to operate advanced software.
• Understands physics and advanced utility designating theory.
• Good visual-spatial abilities and basic math skills.
• Good writing and reading comprehension skills.
