Responsibilities
Operating the Crane:
- Safely and efficiently operate the Grove 65-ton crane (Rough Terrain) according to manufacturer's specifications and industry standards.
- Manipulate crane controls (levers, pedals, dials) to regulate speed and direction of the crane, boom, and hoist movement.
- Execute lifting, moving, and positioning of loads, including components, equipment, walls, rebar mats, and materials.
- Work with a signal person or ground crew to coordinate movements and ensure safe transport of materials.
Pre-Operational Checks and Maintenance:
- Inspect the crane thoroughly before operation, including hydraulic systems, cables, grappling devices, and other mechanisms to detect any wear, damage, or malfunctions.
- Calculate crane capacities and load weights, checking them against lifting capacities to prevent overload.
- Perform pre-operational inspections, safety checks, test lifts, and calculate load charts.
- Clean, lubricate, and maintain crane mechanisms, including cables, pulleys, and grappling devices, making minor repairs as needed.
- Report any defects or malfunctions to the supervisor.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Determine site conditions, including ground stability, before setting up and operating the crane.
- Engage the swing lock and swing brake before extended traveling.
- Ensure outriggers are fully extended and set before any other operation (unless lifting on rubber).
- Verify the area in the swing path of the hook, load, and tail swing is clear of obstructions and personnel before initiating swing operations.
- Review work orders, schedules, and special loading instructions to determine orders and sequences of deliveries.
- Document any incidents or malfunctions accurately.
- Complete worksite and regulatory reporting documentation as necessary.
- Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to stay up-to-date with industry standards and regulations.
Experience Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum of 3 years crane operation experience, including rough terrain cranes with swing cab.
- Experience with and willingness to operate other heavy equipment (boom, front-end loaders, tractors, forklifts) may be required depending on the position.
- NCCER or NCCO Certifications.
- A high school diploma or GED certificate is usually required.
- A valid driver's license.
Skills
- Strong technical skills, including mechanical aptitude and mathematical skills for calculating load capacities.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for precise crane control.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with other workers and supervisors.
- An attention to detail and good observational skills.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment.
