About the role
Stephenson Equipment, Inc., an employee-owned company, is seeking an experienced Crane Field Service Technician to join their team. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing mobile cranes in a field environment throughout Central Pennsylvania.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on mobile and hydraulic cranes and support equipment.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, including fuel, cooling, air, exhaust/aftertreatment, DPF/DEF, and emissions systems.
- Service and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, hoses, and load-sensing circuits.
- Troubleshoot electrical and electronic systems, including CAN bus, PLCs, load moment indicators, rated capacity limiters, and crane control systems.
- Perform annual, frequent, and OSHA/ASME B30-required crane inspections and complete accurate documentation.
- Respond to field service calls using a company-provided service truck and complete on-site repairs to help minimize customer downtime.
- Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics, service manuals, and parts diagrams.
- Maintain accurate repair records, parts usage, and labor hours through work orders or fleet maintenance software.
- Communicate equipment status, repair recommendations, and parts needs clearly with the shop, operations team, and customers.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all company and OSHA safety procedures.
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on experience repairing cranes.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical/electronic systems.
- Experience with National, Manitex, Grove, Manitowoc, Shuttlelift, Terex, or similar mobile cranes.
- Ability to read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and technical service manuals.
- Own set of mechanic’s hand tools; company provides specialty tools, diagnostic laptops/software, and service truck.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs., work at heights, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and a safety-first mindset.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Manufacturer training or certifications such as Grove/Manitowoc or similar.
- Class A CDL or willingness to obtain one.
- EPA 609 / refrigerant certification for A/C service.
- NCCCO Crane Inspector certification or experience performing certified crane inspections.
- Welding and fabrication skills, including MIG or stick welding.
- Experience with fleet maintenance software and electronic work orders.
