About the role
The Counter Sales Associate is responsible for selling items to the public, picking parts for customer orders, and packing them in a timely manner. This position requires high energy, teamwork, and sustained focus throughout the day, with effective customer handling both on the phone and at the counter.
Responsibilities
- Sell products and meet customer needs.
- Write up all orders promptly and accurately, ensuring details such as specifications, processing requirements, shipping, and handling are correct.
- Consider all relevant cost factors when developing quotes to ensure expected gross margins.
- Review in-stock and on-order inventory to determine material availability and anticipate potential excess or aged inventory issues.
- Act as a customer advocate in dealings with departments like Credit, Operations, Shipping, and Purchasing.
- Understand and monitor the gross margin performance expected from accounts.
- Review profit performance of accounts regularly and identify opportunities for improvement (e.g., pricing, product mix, processing set-ups, freight).
- Assist in handling customer complaints and ensure issues are resolved to the satisfaction of both the customer and the company.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Previous customer interaction experience, preferably within the steel industry.
- Highly developed customer service skills.
- Excellent communication and telephone sales skills.
- Effective time management, multitasking, and prioritization abilities.
- Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook; Stelplan experience is a plus.
- Strong listening skills and ability to interpret customer needs.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to read a tape measure to 1/16”.
- Basic competency using fractions and/or decimals in mathematical calculations.
