About the role
The Counter Salesperson is responsible for providing sales assistance to walk-in and telephone customers, assisting with inventory management, and interacting with various departments within the company.
Responsibilities
- Aid the Inventory Operations Controller in maintaining appropriate inventory levels
- Assist outside crews with loading customer vehicles and preparing delivery loads, as needed
- Handle phone calls, emails, or other communications for unavailable coworkers, passing information to them when available
- Clock in on time and be ready to work
- Adhere to all company policies
- Assist other team members with their work when appropriate
- Communicate with the Receiver regarding cancelled orders or materials returned to suppliers
- Communicate professionally to yard crew via radio
- Participate in team meetings and discussions
- Notify customers when product arrives
- Confirm delivery times with customers after scheduled in current dispatching software
- Respond to voicemails and emails promptly with correct grammar, tone, and spelling
- Put clear delivery and contact information on orders
- Greet customers with a smile and communicate with them in a friendly manner
- Complete online training as necessary
- Complete basic ERP order entry; POs, backorders, and change orders
- Invoice customers for building materials
- Alert Purchasing of any stock issues or needs, special order products for customers, and process notes per company policy
- Know product locations in the store
- Regularly attend PK meetings
- Understand how to use selling tools (Simpson book, Parr Pocket Guide book, online websites, Parr U, etc.)
- Follow all AR account and cash handling procedures
- Process tax adjustments when necessary
- Coordinate tool repairs services
- Utilize the interyard transfer system
- Understand weight, height, and length limits, to inform customers of being able to safely handle or transport material
- Manage Outlook and personal notebook
- Proactively use resources to seek information
- Search inventory and open orders in all yards to meet customer’s preferred option
- Issue gift cards and verify balances
- Calculate LF, BF, SQF
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to operate Point of Sale system, personal computer, smartphone, scanner, and any other equipment necessary for the job
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Class C driver’s license or alternative transportation preferred
- Ability to speak, write, and read English required
- Knowledge of retail sales principles, practices, and protocols
- Knowledge of dimension lumber and panel products and other building materials
- Ability to ten-key by touch
- Ability to concentrate and attend to detail amidst a busy work environment
- OSHA Certified Forklift License preferred

Working Conditions
- The primary working conditions are at the sales counter of one of PARR’s retail locations
- Physical requirements include sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, working indoors in a normal office environment for an entire day, must be able to grasp, talk, hear, and operate a computer and keyboard, must be able to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds and carry objects 50 feet, and must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Both local and overnight travel may be required
