About the role

The Counter Salesperson is the first person that a customer sees when they walk into any of the retail locations. This means that the Counter Salesperson is in many cases the face of the company for customers and should demonstrate our FACE values. This position’s main duty is providing sales assistance to walk-in and telephone customers. As time allows, they receive and stock inventory and perform general clean-up and merchandising of the store.

Directly reports to Yard Manager. Interacts daily with General Manager, Assistant Manager, Location Supervisor, Operational Inventory Controller (OIC), Contractor Salespeople, delivery people, and internal & external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist OIC in maintaining an appropriate level of inventory
  • Assist outside crew by loading customer vehicles and preparing loads for delivery, as needed
  • Receive and hold onto phone calls, emails, or other communications intended for a coworker who is currently unavailable, passing the information to them when they are available
  • Clock in on time and ready to work
  • Adhere to all company policies
  • Assist other team members with their work when appropriate
  • Attentive to counter and phones, does warm transfers
  • Communicate with Receiver regarding status of cancelled orders or materials returned to suppliers
  • Consistently display problem-solving skills with customers and co-workers
  • Keep store clean and maintain counter displays of merchandise and literature per PARR’s standards
  • Actively work to build and maintain a positive environment for all employees and customers
  • Communicate professionally to yard crew via radio
  • Participate in team meetings and discussions
  • Notify customer when product arrives
  • Confirm delivery time with customer after scheduled in current dispatching software
  • Respond to voicemails in a timely manner
  • Respond to emails promptly with correct grammar, tone, and spelling
  • Put clear delivery and contact information on orders
  • Answer customer’s questions, complete basic quotes, process estimates, and orders for customer
  • Greet customers with a smile and communicate with customers in a friendly manner
  • Develop and maintain a professional and effective relationship with customers
  • Complete online training as necessary in a timely manner
  • Complete basic ERP order entry; POs, backorders, and change orders
  • Invoice customers for building materials
  • Alert Purchasing of any stock issues or needs, special order products for customers, and process notes per company policy
  • Know product locations in store
  • Always put store stock away
  • Regularly attend PK meetings
  • Understand how to use selling tools (Simpson book, Parr Pocket Guide book, online websites, Parr U, etc.)
  • Complete AMT training
  • Follow all AR account and cash handling procedures
  • Process tax adjustments when necessary
  • Coordinate tool repair services
  • Utilize the interyard transfer system
  • Understand weight, height, and length limits, to inform customer of being able to safely handle or transport material
  • Process ROA payments with required information
  • Able to process Synchrony Bank financing options
  • Understand pricing levels and limit discounting
  • Able to seek out product transactions and order history
  • Use all functions of Mitel
  • Follow proper material return procedures
  • Manage Outlook and personal notebook
  • Proactively use resources to seek information
  • Search inventory and open orders in all yards to meet customer’s preferred option
  • Ability to issue gift cards and verify balances
  • Able to calculate LF, BF, SQF
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
  • Always wear high visibility when necessary and proper uniform
  • Regularly keep aisles and walkways clear
  • Keep workspace clutter-free
  • Always demonstrate consistency in following all company safety protocols
  • Participate on safety committee
  • Be first aid and AED certified
  • Encourage coworkers to follow best safety practices
  • Notify manager about safety issues proactively
  • Always operate equipment safely and follow company safety protocols
  • Promptly report all accidents/incidents to supervisor or safety team

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be able to operate Point of Sale system, personal computer, smartphone, scanner, and any other equipment necessary for the job
  • Must be able to type 30+ WPM
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Class C driver’s license or alternative transportation preferred
  • Ability to speak, write, and read English required
  • Knowledge of retail sales principles, practices, and protocols
  • Knowledge of dimension lumber and panel products and other building materials
  • Ability to ten-key by touch
  • Ability to concentrate and attend to detail amidst a busy work environment
  • OSHA Certified Forklift License preferred

Working Conditions

The primary working conditions are at the sales counter of one of PARR’s retail locations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work indoors in a normal office environment for an entire day
  • Must be able to grasp, talk, hear, and operate a computer and keyboard
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds and carry objects 50 feet
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Both local and overnight travel may be required
