Counselor I
Responsibilities
- Individual and crisis counseling for enrolled students
- Education and outreach to promote wellness
- Provides individual, group, and couples counseling
- Crisis intervention
- Afterschool, on-call support as scheduled
- Conducts clinical and psychological assessment
- Maintains a working knowledge of DSM criteria, recommended therapeutic interventions, and refer for psychopharmacological evaluation
- Provides consultation services
- Provides referrals to students for on and off-campus needs
- Outreach services and presentations
- Creates original presentations and workshops as assigned
- Make clinical and ethical decisions in a team-based environment
- Serves as liaison or committee member in designated area
- Provides case management services as assigned
- Participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations as assigned
- Maintains timely and accurate clinical documentation and scheduling in electronic health records system
- Operates in a professional manner as regulated by Federal law, New York State law and professional and ethical guidelines of mental health professionals
- Assists with other projects, administrative duties and initiatives as assigned
Requirements
- Minimal Qualifications: Master’s degree in mental health counseling related field, or PhD/PsyD in clinical psychology, licensed or license eligible in the state of New York to practice mental health counseling
- Preferred Qualifications: Certification or significant training, and experience treating trauma, eating disorders, and/or neurodiverse populations (ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, etc), experience and/or significant training serving BIPOC, AAPI, and/or the LGBTQ+ communities, experience and/or significant training providing substance disorder treatment
- Experience: Previous experience working with college/university students in a counseling setting, experience with short-term therapy models, experience providing case management services, experience in crisis intervention, experience in group counseling modalities
Qualifications
The Counselor I position requires a clinician to work independently with strong clinical skills. This position will also need to be able to build and foster collaborative relationships across the campus. Creativity in problem-solving is preferred. The ability to handle a flexible workflow and meet rapidly rising demand is necessary. Keen multi-tasking, time management, and planning skills are required. Demonstrated ability to process and maintain highly confidential information is important. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion is expected. Ability to develop, coordinate, and participate in outreach activities and special projects as assigned is necessary. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required. Adequate maintenance of documentation in an electronic records system is expected.
