About the role
The City of Cottonwood is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Fire Department as Firefighters. This position plays a crucial role in protecting lives, property, and the environment within our community.
Responsibilities
- Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and other emergency calls
- Perform fire suppression activities including operating hoses, pumps, and other firefighting equipment
- Conduct search and rescue operations in burning or collapsed structures
- Provide emergency medical care within scope of certification
- Inspect buildings for fire hazards and enforce fire safety codes
- Participate in fire prevention education and community outreach programs
- Maintain firefighting equipment, apparatus, and facilities
- Participate in continuous training and drills to maintain proficiency
- Perform station duties including housekeeping, maintenance, and public assistance
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid Arizona driver's license
- Current Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification (or ability to obtain within one year of hire)
- Current CPR certification
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, including criminal history check, driving record review, and employment verification
- Must pass a physical agility test, written examination, oral interview, and medical examination including drug screening
- Must be able to work in extreme conditions including high temperatures, confined spaces, and hazardous environments
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects (50+ pounds), climb ladders, and work at heights
- Must be available for shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Must reside within 20 minutes response time of the Cottonwood Fire Station upon hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or higher in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, or related field
- Current Arizona State Firefighter I & II certification
- Previous firefighting or emergency medical experience
- Hazardous Materials Operations certification
- Wildland Firefighter certification
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency

Pay
$48,000 - $62,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience. Paramedic stipend available for certified personnel.
Schedule
- 24-hour shifts (typically 7:00 AM to 7:00 AM)
- 48/96 schedule (48 hours on duty, 96 hours off)
- Rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
