We are looking for a skilled Cost Accountant to support financial accuracy and operational insight within a manufacturing environment in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
About the role
This position plays a central role in cost analysis, inventory accounting, monthly close activities, and the development of reliable financial processes. The successful candidate will bring a hands-on approach, strong attention to detail, and the ability to strengthen reporting and controls in a growing operation.
Responsibilities
- Direct product costing activities by maintaining standard costs, validating inventory values, and ensuring cost of goods sold is reported accurately.
- Analyze material, labor, and overhead variances, identify underlying causes, and communicate findings that support corrective action.
- Manage inventory accounting activities, including reconciliation work and coordination of physical count processes.
- Lead month-end close tasks across key accounting areas, reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and account activity for completeness and accuracy.
- Strengthen internal controls related to inventory, costing, revenue, and expenses to improve financial reliability and reduce risk.
- Refine accounting workflows across purchasing, sales, inventory, and production transactions so processes are consistent and repeatable.
- Partner with operations and supply chain teams to ensure financial records accurately reflect production activity and business events.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting analysis, highlighting profitability, cost trends, and operational performance drivers.
- Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and scenario analysis by translating financial and cost data into practical business recommendations.
- Support improvements to accounting systems and reporting tools to enhance data quality, cost visibility, and reporting efficiency.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of accounting experience, including significant exposure to manufacturing cost accounting.
- Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, standard costing methodologies, and variance analysis.
- Experience preparing financial statements, supporting the general ledger, and managing month-end close activities.
- Solid understanding of internal controls, transactional process design, and financial reporting accuracy.
- Advanced Excel skills with the ability to work effectively in ERP or comparable accounting systems.
- Proven analytical ability with experience turning financial data into actionable operational insights.
- Comfortable working in environments where processes are being formalized or improved.
- CPA or eligibility highly preferred.
