Corrections Officer/Certified Detention Deputy- $5,000 Hiring Bonus

About the role

The Broward Sheriff's Office is now offering a hiring incentive for the Certified Deputy Sheriff position. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process and are hired by the agency will receive a one-time payment of $5000.00 at the beginning of their service with the Department of Detention. This initiative will be discontinued once allocated funds are no longer available.

Responsibilities

• Maintains order over detainees; takes appropriate action to ensure the safety and security of the detainees, the public and other law enforcement and detention personnel.
• Receives incoming detainees; conducts searches to detect concealed weapons and contraband.
• Puts detainees in cells; issues cleaning/sanitation supplies; transports laundry and bedding.
• Escorts detainees to and from cells for court appearances, medical treatment, visitation, religious services, conferences, release and other activities.
• Complies with booking and release orders and procedures.
• Picks up mail and commissary orders; inspects incoming mail and packages for contraband and other non-permitted items; delivers packages, mail and commissary items to detainees.
• Supervises detainee work details in and out of the facility or during recreational activities.
• Maintains accurate counts of detainees; maintains complete records and assures that current information on detainees is entered into the computerized record information system.
• May participate in the classification of new detainees; makes cell assignments.
• Responds to inquires regarding status of detainees, visiting procedures and other related detention facility procedures.
• Secures detention facility keys; receives status and incident reports and special instructions from other detention personnel.
• Operates an agency vehicle when appropriate to area of assignment.
• Performs related duties as directed.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• United States Citizen at time of application (F.S.S.943.13(2)).
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
• Must possess a valid Basic Recruit Certificate for Corrections from the State of Florida Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Training.
• Must not have been convicted of any felony.
• All candidates must not have been convicted of any perjury or a false statement charge as an adult.
• All other arrests and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13).

• If ever arrested, candidates must submit official court documents and police reports with the application.
• A written statement explaining the arrest and the outcome must also be attached to the application for review.
• Official court documents can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred.

• Must successfully pass the PHYSICAL AGILITY test. Test results must be submitted with the application.
• The MODIFIED AGILITY will be accepted for candidates who meet ALL of the following criteria:
  • Applicant must be currently certified and working in the position of a sworn Detention Deputy/Corrections Officer.
  • The applicant must have attended a comparable corrections academy either in the state of Florida or any other state.
  • The applicant must have verifiable proof of taking a Physical Agility Test that is measurable and comparable with the current Physical Agility Test administered by the Broward College Institute of Public Safety.
  • Copy of previous Physical Agility test results and the Modified Agility Test results must be attached to the applicant.
• If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must provide a DD214 Member 4 or Service form to the online application.
• Must possess and maintain throughout employment, a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance.
• Driver license must show current address.
• All candidates must submit with the application, a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history.
• Three year, 7 year, and online Florida driving history records will not be acceptable. If you have possessed a driver's license in any other state in the past 10 years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state. For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that state's division of motor vehicles.
• The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources.
