About the role

The Detention Officer position is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of both staff and inmates, overseeing inmate activities, and performing related corrections and law enforcement work.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains security and safety of the detention facility, inmates, and staff.
  • Interviews detainees and checks rap sheets.
  • Reclassifies detainee housing if necessary.
  • Monitors jail access and egress.
  • Operates and monitors security systems.
  • Processes and books inmates, conducts searches, photographs, and fingerprints.
  • Serves as a point of contact for inmates and visitors.
  • Supervises meal times, visitations, recreation, and exercise.
  • Administers first aid and ensures sanitary conditions.
  • Assists with processing indigent envelopes and delivering inmate mail.
  • Patrols the facility, inspects security devices, and searches for contraband.
  • Subdues unruly or violent individuals and investigates incidents.
  • Transports inmates to court or other facilities.
  • Completes and maintains required paperwork.
  • Performs custodial and maintenance tasks.
  • Communicates with various stakeholders.
  • Attends training and meets departmental requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Basic Jail Officer certification.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Pass extensive background check.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to pass physical fitness and agility tests.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Knowledge of detention, law enforcement, and investigative trends.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.

Pay

The base annual wage is generated from a base hourly rate of $22.07 per hour under the standard rotating 12-hour shift schedule. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a 7-day pay cycle.

Schedule

This is a full-time position; typical work hours are 12-hour shifts. The Detention Center operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays during emergencies or as requested.
