About the role
The position involves monitoring, supervising, and maintaining custody of inmates in various facilities, including the Snohomish County Jail, residential work release facility, and community corrections programs. The primary responsibilities include booking inmates, conducting searches, managing food services, overseeing inmate activities, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
Responsibilities
- Books inmates into the jail, work release or community corrections programs; conducts interviews to determine medical and other special needs; and prepares booking information for computer systems.
- Covers personal searches, property searches, fingerprinting, photographing, and identification data collection.
- Releases inmates at the end of their sentences; handles transportation to courts and other appointments; and performs regular security checks.
- Monitors inmates' movements, health, and medication usage; conducts security screenings; and administers or arranges for drug and alcohol tests.
- Administers transfers between jails and ensures compliance with conditions of release for work release inmates.
- Coordinates with various courts and agencies to ensure inmates attend scheduled trials and court appearances.
- Provides orientation and support to work release inmates and program participants, addressing their issues and providing necessary assistance.
- Processes and maintains court documents and handles financial transactions for work release inmates.
- Participates in risk assessments and case reviews for inmates and contributes to their program placement.
- May assist in delivering and administering medications in accordance with relevant laws.
Requirements
Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate, be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient, and pass a criminal background check, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, pre-employment medical exam, and drug screening. Must also pass a post-employment physical fitness and agility test, obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License, and acquire a First Aid and CPR Certificate. Satisfactory completion of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Academy is required within six months of employment.
Qualifications

- Able to pass firearms training and demonstrate proficiency according to collective bargaining agreements.

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with criminal justice system officials and staff, other county employees, and the general public.
Special Requirements
- Pass a criminal history background investigation.

- Obtain a valid Washington State Driver’s License, unrestricted except as to vision.
- Acquire a First Aid and CPR Certificate.
- Carry firearms and demonstrate proficiency annually.
- Complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Academy within six months of employment.
Other Job Duties
- Maintain custody and control of inmates when confined to hospitals or other facilities as required.
- Coordinate with various courts to ensure inmates appear as scheduled for trial.
- Conduct thorough orientations for work release inmates and program participants.
- Work with office, program, and professional staff to develop appropriate interventions for inmates with family, employment, or emotional problems.
- Provide direct one-on-one or group assistance to work release inmates and program participants as needed.
- Receive, record, and maintain court and other documents related to work release inmates and program participants.
- Respond to requests for information concerning work release inmates in accordance with office policy.
- Conduct risk/needs assessments of inmates and contribute to their case reviews and program placement.
- Deliver and administer medications in accordance with RCW 70.48.490.
Physical Effort
The work involves strenuous physical tasks such as restraining belligerent inmates, breaking up fights, and running up flights of stairs to respond to emergencies. Stressful elements of this work are considerable, including exposure to disagreeable situations involving human conflict, anger, hostility, and potential for violence.
Supervision
The employee reports to a Corrections Sergeant or Corrections Lieutenant. The work is performed according to established policies and procedures and is reviewed through observation and evaluation of ability to handle a variety of work situations, reports, and conferences. Unusual situations are referred to the Sergeant.
Working Conditions
The work is performed within a maximum-security detention facility or within a minimum security and work release facility. Employees work in housing areas and have direct inmate contact. Employees may be required to receive PPD testing semi-annually or as needed. Employees are required to work various shift assignments, perform all the functions of all shifts in all areas of the jail, and work weekends and holidays as required. Employees shall be subjected to working mandatory overtime.
