Corrections Deputies perform a full range of assignments as part of a highly motivated, team-oriented group of corrections professionals. The Ingham County Jail currently houses nearly 450 inmates in both direct and indirect supervision housing units.

Corrections Deputies are assigned to the Corrections Division and must maintain custody and control of inmates at all times in a firm but fair manner, with emphasis on their health, welfare, and safety. Officers must work independently and use sound judgment in stressful situations. The jail operates 24/7, and work schedules include nights, weekends, holidays, planned and unplanned overtime, and 12.25-hour shifts.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections to ensure all inmates are accounted for and properly secured according to their housing classification.
• Assist in meeting inmates’ personal needs, requests, and problems in a fair, humane manner following established policies.
• Monitor, control, and document the movement of all persons on and off the assigned duty station.
• Coordinate inmate movement and participation in facility programs while maintaining security of programming staff.
• Assist in maintaining records, gathering data, and preparing reports for grants, Justice Millage, and other correctional needs.
• Maintain a chronological record of daily activity.
• Ensure all inmates receive meals, medication, mail, personal property (as allowed), and clean laundry as provided in policies.
• Escort and search inmates as policies dictate.
• Maintain key control and inspect safety equipment daily.
• Write reports relating to inmate rule violations and other situations.
• Maintain competency in the use of security radios.
• Respond promptly to calls for backup from co-workers.
• Administer first aid, CPR, and render aid for injuries and medical emergencies.
• Attend court on and off duty when required by subpoena.
• Attend and participate in Sheriff’s Office-authorized training, including the Corrections Academy if not certified prior to hiring.
• Work mandatory overtime when directed by a supervisor.
• Follow lawful orders from superior officers concerning all aspects of assignments, duties, and tasks.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED (minimum education requirement). College degree or coursework in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or Corrections preferred.
• Michigan Corrections Academy certification preferred.
• Prior corrections work or military experience preferred but not required.
• Uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye by soft contact lenses, gas permeable lenses, and/or extended wear lenses. No greater than 20/40 vision in each eye correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must not be color blind.
• No prior felony convictions (includes expunged convictions).
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must pass background investigation and clinical evaluations.
• Must be able to work 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Michigan Sheriff’s Coordinating Training Council (MSCTC) Minimum Standards (effective 1/1/2013) require all corrections deputies to meet the following:

• Pass a Physical Agility Test.
• Pass a Reading and Writing Test (administered by EMPCO; certificate of passage required with application).
• Pass a Psychological Test (provided after a thorough background investigation and final interview, if given a conditional job offer).
• Pass a comprehensive illegal substance test.
• Must be a United States Citizen.
• Must have no prior felony convictions.
• Must possess a valid Michigan Operator’s License.

Applicants must demonstrate effective communication skills by engaging, interacting, and working with all individuals to ensure clarity and understanding.

Pay

Starting pay begins at Step 1. Applicants with notable prior corrections experience may be considered for Step 2 ($58,829.83) starting pay upon Sheriff’s and Human Resource Director’s approval. Extra compensation is paid for working assigned holidays, overtime, and night shifts.

Working Conditions

• Works in both indoor and outdoor environments, exposed to notable lights, noises, odors, temperatures, or weather conditions.
• May operate vehicles including cars, trucks, tractors, forklifts, cranes, hoists, and bucket trucks.
• Exposed to hazards such as traffic, moving vehicles, mechanical parts, electrical current, slippery surfaces, chemicals, cleaning solutions, oils, and hazardous materials.
• May be exposed to air quality conditions including fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
• Exposed to noise levels requiring shouting to be heard.
• Exposed to communicable diseases, blood, other body fluids, and individuals in crisis (including those with mental or emotional illness, violent tendencies, or disregard for personal safety).
• Required to use Personal Protection Equipment to minimize risks.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, traverse, climb, balance, twist, bend, stoop/crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, reach, grasp, handle, and pinch.
• Regular stamina for the above physical requirements.
• Periodically performs heavy work requiring exertion of more than 50 pounds of force.
• Regularly requires close visual acuity for tasks within arm’s reach (e.g., viewing computer screens, using measurement devices, inspecting items).
• Regularly requires medium visual acuity for tasks at arm’s reach (e.g., operating machinery, vehicles, or heavy equipment).
• Regularly requires far visual acuity for tasks significantly beyond arm’s reach (e.g., observing buildings, people, or situations).
• Ability to communicate and respond to inquiries in person and over the phone.
• Ability to operate a PC/laptop and enter/retrieve information from a computer.
• Ability to handle varying and often high levels of stress.
