About the role
The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office seeks qualified candidates for the position of Corrections Deputy. This is a rewarding career opportunity in the criminal justice field, with a focus on maintaining the health, welfare, and safety of inmates.
Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections to ensure inmates are accounted for and properly secured.
- Aid in meeting inmates' personal needs and addressing their problems.
- Maintain custody and control of inmates, ensuring their health, welfare, and safety.
- Coordinate inmates' participation in various programs within the facility.
- Document inmate movements and maintain records.
- Ensure inmates receive meals, medication, mail, and personal property as necessary.
- Escort and search inmates as needed.
- Write reports on inmate rule violations and other situations.
- Maintain competency in the use of security radios.
- Respond to calls for backup and attend court as required.
- Participate in Sheriff’s Office authorized training, including the Corrections Academy.
- Administer first aid, CPR, and provide aid for injuries and medical emergencies.
- Work mandatory overtime when directed.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- College degree or course completion in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or Corrections preferred.
- Michigan Corrections Academy certification preferred.
- Prior corrections work or military experience preferred, not required.
- Uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contacts.
- No prior felony convictions (including expunged convictions).
- Valid Michigan driver's license.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Pass background investigation and clinical evaluations.
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Pay
Starting pay is $58,829.83 for Step 1. For notable prior corrections experience, a step 2 starting pay of $64,329.83 may be considered upon Sheriff’s and Human Resource Director’s approval.
Schedule
The position is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation, with possible shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and planned and unplanned overtime.
