About The Job – Your Role

As a Correctional Officer, you will set limits, provide good role models, and assist in facilitating positive change in the lives of adults in custody (AIC). This is an entry-level position with a one-year probationary period that includes the Basic Corrections Course (BCC), a seven-week academy training eligible for college credit, classroom training, online courses, health and fitness classes, force skills training, and a comprehensive Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP). BCC is certified by the Department of Public Safety and Standards Training (DPSST).

During the probationary period, work hours, shifts, and days off will vary based on institutional needs. All Correctional Officer positions are union-represented; training, work hours, breaks, and days off are determined by the institution’s labor contract. After probation, shifts and days off may be subject to a bid process per the labor contract.

By completing the application and passing the NTN React test, you secure a spot on the waitlist for future openings. Once hired, you will begin earning a paycheck during on-the-job training. Previous correctional experience is not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain order within the institution, enforcing rules and regulations while ensuring safety and security.
• Assist adults in custody in obeying agency guidelines and standards, monitoring activities, and supervising work assignments.
• Conduct cell checks and searches of adults in custody and their living quarters for contraband.
• Settle disputes and enforce discipline.
• Observe, inspect, and report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.

Requirements

• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Be 21 years of age or older.
• Be a United States citizen.
• Meet DPSST Physical Standards.
• Demonstrate reading comprehension, report writing, and retention abilities.
• Satisfactorily complete an ODOC background investigation (OAR 259-008-0015).
• Pass the NTN test with a minimum score of 70 percent in all areas.
• Have a good employee work history and a history of law-abiding behavior (OAR 259-008-0070).
• Pass a psychological evaluation and risk assessment as required by HB 2936.
• Show no evidence of substance abuse.
• Be proficient in using computers.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check (felony convictions disqualify applicants).
• Pass a Computerized Criminal History and Motor Vehicles check.
