Location: Tiptonville, TN – Department of Correction, Lake County. Five positions available.

Salary: $4,057.00 – $6,099.00 monthly ($48,684.00 – $73,188.00 annually). Newly hired Correctional Officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, payable over an 18-month period. Hiring rate begins at $4,480 per month.

Full-time position requiring a criminal background check, Motor Vehicle Records screening, and possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license in some positions.

About the Role

The Correctional Officer 2 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty at a state penal institution involving the custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates. This is the working-level class in the Correctional Officer sub-series, flexibly staffed above entry-level (Correctional Officer 1) and below minor supervisory (Correctional Corporal). Employees may be assigned to any shift and post assignment, with work preferences considered but not guaranteed.

Responsibilities

• Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attends to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates.
• Inspects and patrols the grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
• Checks in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
• Observes inmate behavior; counsels with inmates and family about problems; evaluates inmates on room and personal hygiene, attitudes toward employees and other inmates, and sends evaluations to the counseling department.
• Attends staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
• Prepares reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, records of inmates' jobs and pay, daily inmate counts, and requisitions for office supplies.
• Operates and utilizes equipment including two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles.
• Ensures the safety of residents through supervision of their daily activity.
• Breaks up fights or other potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or the use of physical force.
• Carries out and explains existing policies and procedures to others.

Requirements

• Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.
• One year of full-time adult correctional security work or equivalent experience with a federal, state, or ACA-accredited local agency.
• Qualifying full-time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
• Good moral character, as determined by investigation.
• Completion of a criminal history disclosure form and agreement to release all criminal history records to the appointing authority.
• Fingerprint sample submission for a TBI criminal history records check.
• No felony convictions or dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
• Pass a physical examination and psychological evaluation consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and related to the essential functions of the position.
• Pass a pre-employment screening test for use of illegal drugs.
• Willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
• Successful completion of a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment.
