Location: Nashville, TN – Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, Department of Correction. Seven positions available. A Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) screening and criminal background check will be conducted prior to employment.

Pay

  • Monthly salary: $4,057.00 – $6,099.00
  • Annual salary: $48,684.00 – $73,188.00
  • Starting salary for Correctional Officer 2: $4,480.00 per month ($53,760.00 per year)
  • $5,000 sign-on bonus payable over an 18-month period for newly hired Correctional Officers

Schedule

  • Full-time
  • Rotating shifts (day, evening, night) and post assignments; employee preferences are considered but not guaranteed

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school
  • One year of full-time adult correctional security work or equivalent experience with a federal, state, or ACA-accredited local agency
  • Qualifying full-time employment as a Correctional Officer with the State of Tennessee may substitute year-for-year for the required education

Special Qualifications

  • Willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
  • At least 18 years of age on the date of application
  • U.S. citizen
  • Good moral character, as determined by investigation
  • Complete and submit a criminal history disclosure form
  • Agree to release all criminal history records to the appointing authority
  • Provide a fingerprint sample for a TBI criminal history records check
  • No felony convictions or dishonorable discharge from any branch of the U.S. armed forces
  • Pass a physical examination and psychological evaluation consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screening
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment (required for some positions)
  • Successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy upon appointment

Responsibilities

  • Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas
  • Attend to the medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates
  • Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks
  • Process new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property
  • Observe and evaluate inmate behavior, hygiene, and attitudes; counsel inmates and families; report evaluations to the counseling department
  • Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid
  • Prepare reports including daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job and pay records, daily inmate counts, and office supply requisitions
  • Operate equipment such as two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles
  • Ensure inmate safety through daily supervision and intervention in fights or dangerous situations
