About the Role

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I (Electrical) is an entry-level position focused on the custody, security, and supervision of adult inmates engaged in maintenance and repair work within a correctional environment. This role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing high- and low-voltage electrical systems, instructing and supervising incarcerated individuals, and upholding facility security. Employees receive close supervision and may be assigned to day, evening, night, or rotating shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise incarcerated individuals, including maintaining discipline, conducting contraband searches, and enforcing safety, sanitary, custody, and security regulations.
  • Assign installation, maintenance, or repair tasks to incarcerated individuals based on their proficiency levels.
  • Train and instruct incarcerated individuals on methods, techniques, tool usage, and equipment care.
  • Inspect and approve or disapprove work performed by incarcerated individuals to ensure quality standards.
  • Estimate time, materials, and supplies required for maintenance or repair tasks.
  • Order materials and supplies, and maintain records and inventories of tools and equipment.
  • Perform electrical installation, maintenance, and repair tasks on infrastructure.
  • Plan and implement procedures for electrical work.
  • Operate hand and power tools, and maintain time records.
  • Escort third-party vendors and inspect completed work assignments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Two years of electrical experience.
  • U.S. citizenship or Resident Alien status.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination.
  • Completion of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course during the probationary period for Maryland Correctional Training Commission certification.
  • Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license if assigned duties requiring vehicle operation.
  • Availability for 24-hour call-in and substance abuse testing as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with heavy commercial building infrastructure.
  • Maintenance of standby generators, transfer switches, and large kitchen/laundry appliances.
  • Experience with motor control wiring, fire alarms, security CCTV, and data networks.
  • Knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code.
  • Maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings.
  • Installation and repair of control wiring for motors, automation, fire alarms, security CCTV, and data networks.
  • Inspection, testing, and repair of electrical appliances, including kitchen and laundry equipment.

Special Requirements

  • Candidates must meet Maryland Correctional Training Commission selection standards, including:
    • No felony convictions.
    • No misdemeanor convictions within five years.
    • No probations before judgment or parole and probation within five years.
    • No current parole or probation status.
    • No civil drug convictions within three years.
    • No convictions or probations for 12-point driving violations within five years (e.g., DUI, fleeing/eluding police, driving with a suspended/revoked license).
    • No dishonorable military discharge.
    • No unlawful use of natural cannabis or cannabinoids within 12 months preceding hire.

Candidates must indicate all Maryland counties where they are willing to accept employment. Vacancies may be filled statewide, and candidates remain on the eligible list for two years.
