Correctional Lieutenant

Pay Grade 12 – $47,346.72 annually, plus premiums: $5.228/hour locality, $2.13/hour for 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m. shifts, $1.13/hour for 11:01 p.m.–6:59 a.m. shifts, $2.13/hour for weekends, and $2.13/hour for holidays. Full-time, 40 hours/week, eligible for overtime.

About the role

The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice is a multi-faceted agency that serves juveniles of the Commonwealth. This position is deemed essential and has mandatory operations; the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave. May be required to work overtime and any shift as needed. Medical cannabis use is prohibited for employees in this position due to applicable state or federal laws.

Responsibilities

• Supervises institutional operations and a shift in the absence of a Shift Captain.
• Co-leads group counseling sessions and supervises/monitors activities of juveniles within the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).
• Handles routine disciplinary problems and investigates all unusual occurrences.
• Maintains shift logs on juveniles’ activities and notifies supervisors of issues; completes incident reports and other documentation.
• Assists juveniles in complaint procedures and ensures they are aware of their rights, policies, and procedures.
• Provides guidance and informal counseling to Correctional Officers.
• Transports juveniles as needed.
• Performs routine building maintenance, housekeeping, and notifies supervisors of corrections needed.
• Attends staff meetings, case conferences, and trainings as assigned.
• Performs physical efforts in assisting youth with recreational and work-related projects.

Requirements

• High school graduate.
• Two years of experience in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, social work dealing with the rehabilitation of offenders, or in the supervision and care of young adults (ages 12-21) in a residential, correctional, group home, detention, or day treatment program.
• An Associate’s degree in corrections, criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field substitutes for six months of the required experience.
• A bachelor’s degree in corrections, criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field substitutes for one year of the required experience.
• Successful completion of the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy or equivalent training substitutes for one year of the required experience.
• Must be twenty-one years of age.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy within six months of employment (four weeks in Louisville, Kentucky, with overnight lodging provided).
• Must successfully pass a physical examination (cost billed through health insurance; co-pays reimbursed by the department).

Working Conditions

• Hazardous environment due to working in a state correctional or juvenile detention facility.
• Exposure to hazards and dangers associated with operating a motor vehicle while transporting juveniles.

Pay

$47,346.72 annually, plus locality premium ($5.228/hour), shift premiums ($2.13/hour for 3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m., $1.13/hour for 11:01 p.m.–6:59 a.m.), weekend premium ($2.13/hour), and holiday premium ($2.13/hour).

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Overtime and shift work (including nights, weekends, and holidays) may be required.
