About the role

This is an excellent opportunity for qualified individuals to advance within the Department while continuing to play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of our facility. This role is essential in upholding the mission of the Department by ensuring a safe, secure, and rehabilitative environment for both staff and individuals in custody.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of our security team, providing custody, control, supervision, and daily care of adults in custody (AICs).
  • Supervise AICs in various areas, including housing units, control points, program and work assignments, and designated security areas.
  • Maintain order, enforce institutional rules, and respond to emergencies and critical incidents with professionalism and sound judgment.
  • Assist in training and mentoring staff.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience in a correctional security setting where your primary duties were the care and custody of AICs.
  • Be able to obtain, within two weeks, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate.
  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • Be a United States Citizen.

Special Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain a valid Oregon motor vehicle operator's license.

About the Department

The Oregon Department of Corrections is responsible for over 12,000 adults in custody in 12 state prisons throughout Oregon. It advises and evaluates counties regarding administration of probation and parole programs supervising more than 24,000 offenders in Oregon communities. The mission is to protect communities, promote accountability, and transform lives. The Department offers a variety of programs and opportunities to create a safe and healthy environment for our staff, volunteers, and adults in custody.

Working Conditions

  • Constant exposure to adult male AICs within a prison setting.
  • Exposure to emotionally and mentally unstable and deviant behaviors within the work environment on an ongoing basis.
  • Rotating shifts/positions of a 7 day/24 hour operation.
  • Mandatory overtime.
  • Participation on extraction or tactical teams.
  • Searches of unclothed AICs.
  • Collections of urine samples.
  • Some travel and hospital supervision.
  • Perform continuous physical activity which may include bending and standing for prolonged periods.
