About the role
Serves as the assistant to the Chief of Custody and/or as a shift supervisor in an adult correctional facility with the Division of Adult Institutions.
Responsibilities
- Conducts inspections to ensure that Correctional Officers are on duty and attentive to their duties; maintains records of Correctional Officer’s performance/work habits
- Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to the proper facility staff specialists; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behavior, encouraging worthwhile activities
- Assumes responsibility for the operation of the facility in the absence of higher-ranking officers; assumes command during emergencies
- Participates on the facility offender disciplinary committee responsible for determining disciplinary measures to be carried out in cases involving violation of division or facility rules; investigates reported infractions of rules and regulations by offenders or employees
- Serves as a member of the facility classification committee; interviews new offenders, and assists in their assignment; maintains records; prepares, or supervises the preparation of a variety of reports
- Directs inspections and searches of offenders, their living quarters, and other areas of the correctional facility
- Exercises considerable discretion in the performance of daily tasks and in emergency situations; work is reviewed by inspections and reports
- Receives general administrative direction
- Counsels and trains corrections personnel
Requirements
- Four or more years of experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility, of which one year must have been as a Correctional Lieutenant with the Missouri Department of Corrections
- Possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency
Qualifications
- A physical examination by a physician may be required before, or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards of employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections

Pay
- The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $1.50 per hour maximum security differential ($3,120 annually) for all full-time positions domiciled in a maximum-security institution.
Schedule
- By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license
Additional Information
- Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:
- A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
- A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.
