Corporate Tax Counsel (RELOCATION AVAILABLE)
State Farm is opening a satellite office in Chicago and seeking subject matter expertise to supplement our Bloomington, IL-based Corporate Law team. This is a hybrid position based in our Chicago, IL Corporate Law Department Satellite Office, with work arrangements subject to change based on business needs. Relocation assistance is available if necessary.
About the Role
This position is within the Tax, Reinsurance and Financial Counseling unit of the Corporate Law Department, located in Chicago's West Loop. The unit advises on insurance-related tax, general corporate tax issues, ERISA matters concerning State Farm benefit programs, and financial services products. It also handles international tax issues, acquisitions, reinsurance matters, and financial planning support.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on federal, state/local, and international tax matters.
- Advise on federal and state audits and other tax controversy work.
- Support tax compliance efforts.
- Provide legal counsel on company transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance, and federal/state tax credits.
- Offer legal advice to representatives of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates.
- Analyze legal problems and interpret laws and regulations.
- Approach legal matters and litigation resolution creatively.
- Serve as a resource for the organization on complex legal issues.
Requirements
- 7+ years of federal and state corporate income tax experience, preferably at a medium to large-size law firm, national office of a prominent accounting firm, or in-house corporate legal department.
- Understanding of insurance company taxation is helpful.
- Experience with mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance, and tax credits is beneficial.
- Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school with excellent academic credentials.
- Active license to practice law in at least one state and membership in good standing of the bar.
- If not licensed in Illinois, must obtain an in-house limited license and apply to the Illinois Board of Admissions within 90 days of start date.
- Proactive mindset with a commitment to providing quality legal advice and learning agility.
- Demonstrated willingness to develop expertise in new subject matters and enthusiastic participation in a team environment.
Additional Details
- No outside legal practice permitted except authorized pro bono work.
- New hires must cease all outside practice and suit involvement before joining State Farm.
- Limited travel may be required, including occasional trips to Corporate Headquarters in Bloomington, IL.
- May work irregular hours due to workload and nature of responsibilities.
Pay
- Potential starting salary range: $185,000 - $280,000 (high end limited to applicants with significant relevant experience).
- Compensation based on a standard 38:45-hour work week.
