About the role

This position reports to the Corporate Safety Director and is based out of the corporate Knoxville, TN office. It does not have any direct reports and works closely with operating companies’ safety leads, field safety professionals, project teams, and senior leadership to provide training, guidance, and compliance support for the corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Program across Phillips Power, Phillips Heavy, Phillips Fleet, and Phillips Environmental.

The expected work schedule is Monday through Friday with availability on weekends when needed. This position requires extensive travel outside of the Knoxville, TN area and is field-based. Occasionally, it may be assigned to a long-term traveling project supporting an operating company.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts field assessments and audits to ensure compliance with the Corporate EH&S Program Manual, applicable local/state/federal regulations, and project/client-specific requirements.
  • Works with project teams to resolve identified hazards and generates reports documenting audit findings, following up to ensure timely corrective action.
  • Provides recommendations to the Corporate EH&S Team for program improvements based on field observations.
  • Participates in Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) and other incident investigations, reviewing Root Cause Analysis and Incident Reports to offer input on causation and programmatic improvements.
  • Reviews, schedules, and coordinates Industrial Hygiene sampling and results as required.
  • Assists in client pre-qualifications, pre-bid, and pre-construction meetings.
  • Serves as a resource in the development of corporate EH&S policies and procedures, identifying areas for improvement within the EH&S Program Manual.
  • Provides project safety coverage as needed, including disaster and emergency response support.
  • Delivers EH&S training and orientations infrequently.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by PIC Corporate Safety & Risk.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or a similar field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of safety experience in the construction industry, with certifications from the BCSP (CHST, ASP, CSP) highly preferred.
  • OR minimum of 12 years of safety experience in the construction industry, with OSHA 500/502 and CHST certification or higher BCSP credential.
  • Previous experience working with Mining, Heavy Civil, and Power Utilities Construction (e.g., large-scale water projects, above-ground mining, industrial/commercial site development, right-of-way clearing, vegetation management, drilled shafts/foundations). Some field experience in multiple listed disciplines is required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable regulations and safe work practices related to heavy civil and power delivery construction activities.
  • Ability for extensive travel, with most weekends spent at home.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence Models is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • May work 8–12 hours per day, 5–7 days per week in extreme hot and cold environments after acclimatization.
  • Required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) daily, including fire-rated clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, lace-up boots, and gloves.
  • May be exposed to snakes, insects, and similar hazards; PPE and protective clothing/creams provided to minimize exposure.
  • May work on variable terrain in performance of duties.
  • Required to operate a motor vehicle.

Additional Considerations

Candidates accepting an offer of employment must undergo and successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. This exam ensures potential employees meet health and fitness standards for the role, assessing overall physical health, identifying any medical conditions that could interfere with job performance, and verifying capability to safely perform essential duties. Completion and clearance of this physical are mandatory steps in the hiring process.
