About the role
As ThredUp's Copy Lead, you'll own how ThredUp sounds, helping define the voice and tone post-rebrand and bringing that voice to life across every touchpoint. Equal parts writer and editor, you're at home in both big-picture strategy and hands-on craft. You'll lead editorial direction while writing and editing copy, and partner closely with the creative and brand team to shape campaigns and creative concepts. You'll build and own a copy agent that uses AI to speed up execution and scale what one person can produce.
Responsibilities
- Set editorial direction and own how ThredUp sounds across every touchpoint, shaping voice, tone, and messaging post-rebrand, with room to grow into a broader voice for the brand over time.
- Be the voice of the brand across the company.
- Write and edit sharp, brand-right copy across all touchpoints, from commercial scripts to site and email to social, paid advertising, packaging, in-product, and campaigns.
- Shape the concepts behind brand campaigns and creative initiatives as a creative partner, bringing a point of view that pushes the creative work forward from first spark to final execution.
- Build, own, and evolve our copy agent, putting AI to work as leverage that keeps taste sharp and output fast.
- Partner with the brand team and Creative Director to build the systems behind how ThredUp writes post-rebrand, from the voice and tone guide to messaging frameworks and the briefing and review process that keeps quality high as volume scales.
- Bring on, mentor, and manage a bench of copy contractors, flexing freelance support up or down.
- Partner with the product team on UX and product copy, so every step of buying and selling is easy to follow and sounds like ThredUp.
Requirements
- 6 to 9 years writing and editing for consumer brands, ideally in e-commerce, fashion, or retail.
- A portfolio that shows a clear point of view and the taste to define a brand voice, backed by experience across short and long form, spanning brand and campaign work as well as promotional, marketing, and transactional copy.
- An editor and a strategist at heart who can define how ThredUp sounds, taking ownership of the brand's voice and pushing both the work and the brand forward.
- Fluency with AI as a creative tool, and excitement about building it into your workflow to work faster, sharpen ideas, and elevate the craft.
- Sharp attention to detail and comfort working directly in Figma, making edits and addressing feedback in close partnership with designers.
- A natural collaborator who works easily across brand, design, product, and growth, and brings out the best in the creative team.
- Comfort with autonomy and ambiguity, and the ability to juggle multiple projects without dropping quality.
- A finger on the pulse of fashion, culture, and resale, and the instinct to keep our copy feeling current and culturally sharp.
- A passion for secondhand and sustainability, and belief in what resale can do for people and the planet.
