About the role
The Office of Special Education monitors the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) by local education agencies to ensure that all children with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education. This position provides supervisory and administrative leadership necessary to develop quality services and ensure the procedural safeguard rights for toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities, ages 3-21, as identified under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Responsibilities
- Provide supervisory and administrative leadership necessary to develop quality services and ensure the procedural safeguard rights for toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities, ages 3-21, as identified under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Oversee the activities of the Effective Practices, Dispute Resolution, and Compliance sections and evaluate the performance of the leaders of those sections.
- Engage in continuous learning and advise the Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Special Education relative to administrative and educational issues associated with the responsibilities of the office.
- Collaborate with the Office of Special Education Leadership Team and Special Education Coordinator of Finance to develop a budget for administrative activities of the IDEA state set-aside allocation.
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of Data and others to ensure relevant data is collected, organized, and disseminated to office staff, regional consultants, and other stakeholders for decision-making.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Commissioner and Director of Effective Practices in the development, submission, and implementation of the Part B State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP).
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of Data and the Office of Childhood on the required planning and development, submission, and implementation of long-term strategies and operations to achieve alignment of goals set out in the Part B State Performance Plan (SPP) and Annual Performance Report (APR) for Special Education, Office Strategic Plan, Department Strategic Plan, and Commissioner’s Goals.
- Demonstrate regular, reliable and engaged attendance.
Requirements
- Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in special education or equivalent area.
- OR Three or more years of teaching, coordination, supervision, or administration of special education or other experience that contributes directly to the understanding of activities of this assignment.
