Coordinator - Laboratory Services
About the role
We are seeking an individual with a strong interest in client relations and staff scheduling, as well as a desire to grow into a role that includes oversight of employee assignments, competency assessments, and record management. This individual will maintain positive customer relationships within ambulatory care settings while collaborating closely with the main laboratory at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital to support quality metrics, address operational deviations, and promote continuous improvement. Occasional travel to laboratory sites throughout the Jackson market may be required. The coordinator will also participate in periodic CAP inspections, helping ensure the laboratory fulfills its responsibilities as an inspection unit. Additional duties will be assigned as the position and departmental needs evolve.
Reporting to the Laboratory Director or Manager, this role coordinates the daily operation of large or technically complex laboratory areas, ensuring standard work methods and consistent quality.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates daily operations of the laboratory, including scheduling employees and daily work assignments across large or technically complex sections.
- Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning, testing, and reporting to meet service standards.
- Assists other laboratory staff and leaders to meet or exceed customer expectations using quality management techniques to gather data and improve processes.
- Compiles and maintains employee records, including attendance, work assignments, performance records, proficiency testing, and competency records as required by accrediting agencies.
- Coordinates activities and maintains records of preventive maintenance programs.
- Coordinates the validation of new methods, instruments, and software as required.
- Organizes and participates in the on-boarding of new employees and continuing education.
- May coordinate the rotation and training of Residents, Fellows, and students in clinical rotations.
- Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Monitors compliance with regulatory and accrediting requirements.
Requirements
- Minimum of an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, or biologic science, medical technology, or clinical laboratory science.
- Three to five years of progressive responsibility in a laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, technical proficiency, and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions and coordinate quality and volume of work.
- Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized agency (e.g., ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS, or HEW) is preferred.
- Working knowledge of statistics, basic computer software, and laboratory methodologies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
