About the Role
The I&E Design Coordinator reports to the Supervisor, Design Services and works closely with Project Managers, Field Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance on multiple projects to coordinate development from inception to completion. This role involves tracking information exchange among stakeholders—including the corporate design team, third-party engineering contractors, installation contractors, and operations—to ensure compliance with Company and industry standards. The coordinator must have proven experience in resolving technical disputes, expediting workflow, and meeting project deadlines related to design and drafting requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate project design and drafting management in accordance with industry and company standards to ensure successful project completion
- Provide standardized PFD/P&ID symbology for drawing development
- Provide and verify electrical equipment and instrument tagging numbers
- Initiate and provide new Facility Codes for grassroots facility projects
- Resolve drawing development issues
- Work with third parties to identify existing drawings for editing
- Review and identify any deviation from Company standards for drawing development
- Perform technical and administrative reviews of design packages submitted by third parties to ensure compliance with all relevant Company specifications, industry codes, standards, and accepted practices
- Review project "Issued" drawings and "As-Built" drawings
- Prepare process flow diagrams (PFD), piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID), general equipment layouts, facility plot plans, and equipment and instrument lists for plant, pipeline, and related facilities construction projects (primarily for smaller Field Engineering or Operations projects; large capital efforts use third-party engineering)
- Assist in developing Project Scopes, Engineering/Design Scopes, and Construction Scopes of Work for use in establishing contracts with third parties
- Attend project meetings to obtain full understanding of customer needs and scope definitions, and provide technical input toward efficient and effective designs
- Assist in reviewing man-hour estimates and work schedules to assure efficiency in project execution
- Coordinate distribution of design packages to ensure all stakeholders have input and necessary information is exchanged
- Provide design and drafting services for time/budget-critical projects
- Provide design and drafting services associated with preliminary development of potential projects
- Create parts lists by performing material take-offs to ensure timely availability of items (primarily for smaller projects; large capital efforts use third-party engineering)
- Maintain records of documents and correspondence pertaining to technical design issues throughout project development
- Participate in the development and maintenance of Company standard drawings
- Maintain a high level of expertise in design and drafting and ensure access to specialty resources and technology
- Provide necessary guidance and instruction to support staff to ensure efficiency in daily department operations
- Assist in developing and implementing specifications and procedures to facilitate lower costs in creating and maintaining drawings and documentation
- Coordinate with Project Managers, purchasing agents, inspectors, engineering contractors, and construction contractors relating to design drawing content
- Coordinate with Project Managers on design issues to assure effective, linear project progress
- Assist in drafting associated with daily system operation
- Provide guidance to enhance others' ability to obtain required information through departmentally developed tools and methods
- Assist in developing and implementing techniques for more efficient CADD utilization and recommend appropriate drafting software applications
- Participate in preliminary project site surveys to identify potential constraints and existing system points of connection
- Travel by air and/or automobile to facility sites as required
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalency with some college or technical school training
- Two-year college drafting degree or technical schooling with emphasis on CADD design preferred
- Relevant level of drafting and design experience with some project coordination experience
- Strong plant and/or pipeline-related design experience preferred
- Relevant level of CADD experience with recent AutoCAD experience
- Minimum five years pertinent design experience and two years Project Coordination experience
