About the role

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation seeks an Armed Special Conservator of the Peace to serve as Public Safety Patrol Sergeant. In this armed role, you will uphold and enforce Virginia state laws and City of Williamsburg ordinances across all Foundation properties, act as shift supervisor in the absence of the Master Sergeant, and respond to emergencies in a timely and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine patrols—foot, bicycle, or vehicle—of all Colonial Williamsburg buildings, grounds, parking lots, museums, historic-area properties, resorts, golf courses, restaurants, retail establishments, and outlying properties to protect exhibits and visitors.
• Monitor safety conditions, document unusual events, and provide timely reports to management.
• Detect and conduct preliminary investigations of crimes or unusual activities, including surveillance, interviews, evidence collection, and reporting to supervisors.
• In the absence of the Master Sergeant, supervise daily activities of Public Safety Patrol Officers and, in emergencies, coordinate the department’s response.
• Perform security assessments of Foundation properties and report vulnerabilities to the Director of Public Safety.
• Operate the Communications Center: receive and prioritize calls, dispatch units or mutual aid, monitor radio traffic, alarm systems, CCTV, and access control; log calls and complete emergency notifications.
• Monitor NOAA weather radio and issue appropriate emergency notifications.
• Conduct breath alcohol and controlled substance tests as needed; review subordinate reports when in charge of the shift.
• Secure and manage traffic accident scenes and hazardous roadway conditions.
• Act as the designated agent of CWF/CWC management during emergencies and coordinate with external agencies until relieved by senior management.
• Maintain order, mediate disputes, and provide emergency assistance including first aid, CPR, and AED use.
• Enforce Foundation rules and regulations; control access to restricted areas; escort employees and guests as needed.
• Conduct background investigations for Public Safety Department positions and make hiring recommendations.
• Set up crowd, traffic, and parking control barriers/equipment; maintain open communications to build community partnerships and reduce crime potential.
• Develop lesson plans and conduct training for Public Safety staff and Colonial Williamsburg employees; maintain shift scheduling and update training materials.
• As an essential employee, be available to report to work or remain at work during poor weather, storm events, and emergency conditions.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED plus two years as a CWF Public Safety Patrol Officer, or one year as a CWF Public Safety Corporal.
• Excellent public contact and communication skills; ability to deal with people under stress.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and preparing reports using a computer.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment under stress.
• No history of criminal convictions except minor traffic violations.
• Ability to qualify annually in CPR, first aid, and AED use.
• Willingness to work irregular/extended hours, holidays, evenings, and weekends.
• Thorough knowledge of CWF public safety operations, electronic security and fire alarm systems, the Code of Virginia, and City of Williamsburg ordinances.
• Understanding of the CWC bargaining unit’s rights.
• Ability to secure bonding and professional liability insurance as an armed Special Conservator of the Peace.
• Ability to pass semiannual firearms proficiency and pre-employment substance abuse testing; subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license with acceptable driving record; must provide a 5-year Motor Vehicle Record prior to employment.
• At least 21 years of age.
• No more than 1 moving violation or at-fault accident within 12 months; no more than 2 moving violations or at-fault accidents within 36 months; no serious motor vehicle violations (e.g., excessive speeding, reckless driving, DUI/DWI, suspended or revoked license).

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Police Academy.
• Two years of college coursework in Police Science or a related subject.
• Prior supervisory or leadership experience.
• Prior law enforcement experience.

Pay

The anticipated hiring range is $21–$32 per hour, with actual compensation determined by the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, internal equity, and role requirements.
