Cook / Part-Time, Rotating Day & Evening Shifts

Location: Silver Bay, Minnesota

Part-time, unlimited position with rotating shifts (Day: 6:30am–3:00pm / Evening: 11:30am–8:00pm). Schedule includes at least 64 hours per 2-week pay period and may include additional hours based on business needs. Shift differential of $2.25 per hour for all hours worked between 6:00pm and 6:00am. Eligible for a $2,500 new hire bonus if hired into this AFSCME-represented part-time role.

About the Role

The Minnesota Veterans Home (MVH)–Silver Bay is seeking a part-time cook to prepare meals for residents in a long-term care setting. This position is initially eligible for full employer contribution toward health and dental insurance benefits.

Responsibilities

• Cook and prepare food according to standard recipes and special medical diets.
• Wash and clean work areas, utensils, and equipment.
• Substitute menu items as required and adjust recipes for varying numbers of people.
• Receive, store, and inventory food and supplies while maintaining sanitary and safe conditions.
• Follow established food handling, holding, and storage procedures; provide direction to Food Service Workers as needed.
• Complete and maintain ServSafe Certification during the probationary period.

Requirements

• Knowledge of large-scale cooking methods and equipment.
• Understanding of food values, nutrition, and health/safety principles in food preparation.
• Ability to follow instructions, read and comprehend written materials, and prepare special medical diets.
• Successful completion of a Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check, tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening or chest x-ray, and employment reference checks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience cooking in a large healthcare facility, such as long-term care or senior care.
• Experience with inventory and stocking.
• Knowledge of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI).

Pay

Salary range: $21.78 – $29.73 per hour.
