Insight Housing (formerly Berkeley Food & Housing Project) has provided housing, food, and support services for over 50 years, helping individuals move from homelessness to safe, affordable homes across seven Bay Area counties.
About the role
The Cook supports the meals program at our Berkeley locations by preparing and distributing meals, maintaining kitchen safety and sanitation, and assisting with inventory and program needs.
Responsibilities
- Cook daily meals and ensure proper safety and sanitation in food preparation and serving.
- Wash dishes, clean kitchen and food storage areas, and complete other cleaning tasks.
- Assist with menu prepping, inventory (ordering, receiving, organization), and program statistics (collecting and reporting).
- Coordinate with shelter manager and resident advocates to assess program needs and provide support.
- Drive own or agency vehicle to deliver meals to various agency sites as assigned.
- Perform tasks for hosting and serving Community Meals, including setup/breakdown, directing volunteers, serving food, light janitorial, and security.
- Attend and participate in all meetings and trainings as assigned.
- Complete and submit timesheets accurately and on time.
- Work within Insight Housing’s Code of Conduct and perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- At least one year of food prep or cooking experience in a restaurant or group setting.
- Commitment to serving homeless individuals; prior experience working with homeless clients is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of food safety procedures and possession of CA Food Handler’s Certification or SERV Safe Certification.
- Knowledge of PC computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) or ability to learn.
- Good verbal communication and excellent interpersonal skills with a flexible, can-do attitude.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, multitask, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain professional conduct, attitude, and appearance at all times.
Special Requirements
- Valid California driver license and an MVR sufficient for agency auto liability insurance.
- Reliable personal vehicle and current auto insurance (preferred).
- Ability to receive and maintain criminal records clearance.
- Ability to obtain tuberculosis (TB) clearance.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly use hands and fingers to handle objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Frequently stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, talk, hear, and see clearly.
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- May lift or move up to 50 lbs.
Pay
$25/hour
