About the Role
The Cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, and packaging all meals in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining high standards of quality. This position also ensures that all kitchen and food prep areas are clean and sanitized daily.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and portion ingredients prior to cooking, including washing, cutting, and marinating according to all applicable guidelines.
- Follow recipes and ensure consistent quality.
- Collaborate with the Food Service Manager to modify preparation and/or daily menu to accommodate the needs of clients.
- Assist in inventory control by monitoring stock levels and reporting shortages to the Food Service Manager.
- Complete monthly food and non-food inventories, restocking as needed.
- Maintain accurate food service records.
- Adhere to all funder and regulator policies, including but not limited to USDA and Department of Health.
- Follow food safety and sanitation standards, including proper food handling, storage, and cleaning practices.
- Adhere to Department of Health guidelines for sanitation of surfaces, storage units, appliances, and appropriate personal attire.
- Clean refrigerator and freezer according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Clean and polish stove, counters, and appliances daily.
- Properly label and store perishable and nonperishable food items.
- Sweep and mop floor daily; mop spills as they occur.
- Participate in agency self-assessments, funder reviews, and required monitoring.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of experience working as a cook in a food service kitchen.
- Serve Safe Certified is preferred; ability to acquire certification within one year of hire is required.
- Experience in institutional (large-scale) meal planning and preparation preferred.
- Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
