Position Title: Cook (1st and 2nd Shift)
Job Category: University Staff

  • Position Duties:
    • Perform routine and non-routine food preparation activities including cook-to-order and specialty foods (50%)
      • Prepare meals according to recipes and quality standards
    • Handle and store food safely and hygienically
  • Train and guide student workers (20%)
    • Teach proper food preparation techniques
  • Assign tasks and schedule subordinate staff
  • Greet customers, answer questions, and provide information regarding food preparation and associated activities (10%)
    • Communicate effectively with customers
  • Answer inquiries about menu items and services
  • Adhere to federal, state, campus, and local safety regulations, policies, and procedures (10%)
    • Follow food safety guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards
  • Clean, inspect, and maintain bakery equipment and work areas to ensure adherence to safe food quality, handling, and sanitation processes and procedures (10%)
    • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen
  • Inspect equipment for damage and repair as needed
  • Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Required Qualifications:

    • Experience in various food service concepts (Full service, quick service, etc.)
      • Work in different types of food service environments
    • At least two years of experience preparing food in a commercial kitchen environment
      • Gain hands-on experience in a professional kitchen setting
    • Basic cooking skills: Sauteing, Broiling, Frying, Roasting, Butchery, Garde Manger, Pantry, Breakfast Cookery, etc.
      • Develop proficiency in various cooking methods
    • Supervisor or Lead worker experience in a food service environment (training, assigning tasks, and scheduling of subordinate staff)
      • Lead and manage a team of student workers
    • Experience cooking food according to recipes, quality standards, presentation standards, and food preparation checklists
      • Follow detailed instructions and ensure consistency in food preparation
    • Experience working in higher education, hotel, hospital, or institutional facility
      • Apply knowledge in diverse settings
    • Associate's Degree or higher in Culinary Arts or related field
      • Earn a formal education in culinary arts
    • ServSafe Sanitation Certification or equivalent
      • Obtain certification to ensure food safety

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Basic cooking skills: Sauteing, Broiling, Frying, Roasting, Butchery, Garde Manger, Pantry, Breakfast Cookery, etc.
      • Additional cooking techniques beyond the minimum requirements
    • Supervisor or Lead worker experience in a food service environment (training, assigning tasks, and scheduling of subordinate staff)
      • More extensive supervisory experience
    • Experience cooking food according to recipes, quality standards, presentation standards, and food preparation checklists
      • Enhanced attention to detail in food preparation
    • Experience working in higher education, hotel, hospital, or institutional facility
      • Apply knowledge in more specialized settings
    • Associate's Degree or higher in Culinary Arts or related field
      • Earn a more advanced degree in culinary arts
    • ServSafe Sanitation Certification or equivalent
      • More comprehensive food safety training
