About the role

As a Controls Technician I, you’ll begin your career in commercial building automation and controls by assisting experienced technicians with basic installation, startup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of DDC systems, sensors, actuators, controllers, and integration with HVAC equipment in office buildings, hospitals, schools, and industrial facilities. Under close supervision you’ll gain hands‑on experience with entry‑level tasks while learning to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient controls solutions that support sustainable building performance. The role includes structured training, mentorship, and clear advancement paths toward becoming a skilled journeyman.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior technicians with installation, wiring, termination, and startup of building automation systems, DDC controls, sensors, actuators, valves, and related HVAC equipment.
  • Support basic troubleshooting, calibration, and preventive maintenance under direct guidance to ensure optimal system performance and energy efficiency.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, sequences of operation, control diagrams, and technical documentation to execute accurate work.
  • Perform general service‑call support: prepare tools/parts, document findings, take photos, and complete basic work‑order entries.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas, vehicles, and tools; load/unload equipment and materials as needed.
  • Participate fully in daily safety briefings, job hazard analyses, toolbox talks, and follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements.
  • Actively learn controls platforms (e.g., BACnet, LON, Tridium/Niagara, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell), sequences of operation, and industry best practices through on‑the‑job training, ride‑alongs, and assigned coursework.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and team members, reporting observations and asking questions to build knowledge.

Requirements

  • Experience: 0–3 years in construction, labor, mechanical, electrical, facilities maintenance, or related field; no prior controls/HVAC experience required.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate degree, trade‑school certificate, or technical training in HVAC, controls, electronics, or related field preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required; OSHA 10‑hour certification encouraged.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lb, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field‑based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, rooftops, mechanical rooms, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, electrical hazards, and extreme temperatures; strict adherence to OSHA regulations, hazard identification, and required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, harness, steel‑toed boots). Occasional regional travel or on‑call rotations may be required.

Skills

  • Basic mechanical/electrical aptitude and familiarity with tools such as multimeters and hand tools.
  • Strong safety awareness, attention to detail, and willingness to follow instructions and learn quickly.
  • Customer‑service orientation, clear communication, and teamwork.
  • Basic documentation skills (work orders, photos, notes) and proficiency with smartphones/tablets for digital reporting.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to pass background/drug screening and maintain a clean driving record.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and level, with opportunities for performance incentives.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, HSA options with employer contributions in select plans, and company‑paid basic life and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
  • Paid time off, holiday pay, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan.
