Controls Supervisor

About the role

The Electrical Controls Supervisor will be a key contributor and provide support to the overall operational and maintenance objectives to reach top-quartile mill status. This role involves troubleshooting electrical, instrumental, and process malfunctions, including mechanical power transmission equipment and hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The successful candidate will diagnose, repair, and overhaul automatic control valves, sensors, positioners, actuators, electrical AC/DC systems, and related systems, while demonstrating strong analytical skills and the drive to support growth in West Fraser’s US lumber business.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and improve PLC and other automation control systems while ensuring safe and reliable work practices.
• Train and impart knowledge to mill personnel to elevate the skill level of the team.
• Engage and collaborate with mill-level personnel to understand and address mill needs effectively.
• Manage and develop the electrical team.
• Troubleshoot drives, PLC issues, control issues, and electrical problems, including remote guidance for mill personnel.
• Maintain and optimize various software and hardware systems.
• Respond to emergency situations with a "whatever it takes" mindset.
• Identify opportunities for improvement and assist in implementing these changes.
• Support project planning, startups, and ramp expectations, working with vendors to exceed their expertise.

Requirements

• Previous industrial experience.
• Familiarity with Allen Bradley products, VFD drives, soft starters, and HMIs.
• Experience with PLC 5 and Control Logix PLC platforms.
• Knowledge of communication network protocols: Ethernet, DeviceNet, ControlNet.
• Proficiency in computer and Microsoft Office software packages.
• Experience working with high and low voltages.
• Demonstrated supervisory abilities.
• Ability to manage small projects and day-to-day work planning.
• Experience following electrical schematics.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and a proven safe work record.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience with controls and automation.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in manufacturing.
