Controls Engineer II
About the role
As an Industrial Controls Engineer II, you’ll design, program, and support industrial control systems (ICS) and the industrial networks that connect them across the University of Iowa utility system, a complex multi-plant campus environment. This is an on-site, hands-on engineering role in Iowa City.
Responsibilities
- Designs, develops, programs, and supports ICS/PLC/HMI solutions, including control logic, sequences, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation
- Reviews design and construction packages for controls upgrades/expansions and ensures seamless integration into existing systems
- Provides engineering support across site-wide CAPEX initiatives, including scope development and technical review
- Partners with technicians and operations teams to troubleshoot complex control system issues and restore safe, reliable performance
- Applies root cause analysis to prevent repeat failures and improve system availability
- Supports secure design and change practices in live environments where ICS changes can have immediate operational impact
- Improves the quality and structure of ICS asset data and maintenance programs within CMMS/EAM systems
- Drives continuous improvement in reliability, documentation, and operational standards across the controls environment
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Automation, Technology, Electrical, Computer, or related) with a minimum of two (2) years of ICS/controls experience, or
- Associate degree (AAS) in (Industrial Automation, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Instrumentation & Control, or closely related field) with a minimum of four (4) years of directly relevant ICS/controls experience
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming and HMI development in industrial environments
- Strong troubleshooting capability, including root cause analysis across control systems, instrumentation, and communications
- Experience designing, configuring, or modifying industrial control systems in live environments (beyond maintenance or calibration activities)
- Ability to safely implement changes in live operating environments with a strong safety mindset
- Relevant certifications (e.g., ISA CAP/CCST or OEM platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, Emerson) are a plus

Pay
Salary Range: $77,100 – $118,220 USD annually
Schedule
This role requires on-site attendance on a daily basis.
