Controls Engineer

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, document, and build control systems including electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
  • Develop, program, and commission PLC and HMI systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Fanuc, ABB) to control automated machinery and production lines.
  • Integrate vision systems (Keyence, Cognex) and sensors, barcode readers, and other field devices into control architectures.
  • Perform hardware selection, component assembly, wiring, and on-site installations, ensuring compliance with electrical and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and debug control hardware and software, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and test engineers to define control requirements, IO lists, and system interfaces for automotive and transmission applications.
  • Develop and maintain documentation including PLC code comments, schematics, test procedures, and commissioning reports.
  • Design and execute system-level tests using LabVIEW, TestStand, or similar tools; support automated test equipment and validation activities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by optimizing control strategies, improving system reliability, and reducing cycle time.
  • Provide technical support and training to customers and field service teams during installation, start-up, and after-sales support.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience designing and commissioning industrial control systems in manufacturing environments; automotive industry experience preferred.
  • Proficient in PLC and HMI programming (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens S7, Fanuc/ABB where applicable).
  • Hands-on experience with electrical schematics, control panel assembly, wiring, and installation.
  • Familiarity with vision systems (Keyence, Cognex) and integration of sensors, encoders, barcode readers, and industrial communications (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus).
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for both hardware and software; experience with instrumentation and test equipment.
  • Experience with LabVIEW, TestStand, or similar test automation frameworks is a plus.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and electro-hydraulic controls, and familiarity with transmission-related systems is desirable.
  • Experience with PCB/CAD tools such as ORCAD, Cadence is a plus for custom electronics integration.
  • Ability to read and produce electrical schematics, bill of materials, and control system documentation; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites for installation, commissioning, and support as required.
