Controls Engineer 1

About the role

As a Controls Engineer at Top Hat Engineering, you will develop, program, and commission automation control systems from concept through implementation. This includes creating virtual commissioning environments using Emulate3D, developing PLC logic programs from scratch, and designing SCADA and HMI applications within Ignition and FactoryTalk Optix Studio platforms. You will also design and document detailed electrical control systems, producing electrical schematics and panel assembly drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.

Responsibilities

• Work with multiple cross-functional engineers to bring an idea from concept to reality.
• Design and develop logic programs to support a wide variety of customers.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate conveyor controls solutions, automated material handling equipment, and autonomous vehicles.
• Provide technical expertise in controls software design, development, and deployment.
• Perform on-site commissioning and testing support.
• Break down design into manageable development tasks and maintain project schedules.
• Provide 24/7 remote support when required.
• Mentor and train less experienced engineers.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Controls Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering.

2+ years of experience in control systems engineering with a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree.

Skills

• Ability to read and debug PLC programs.
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.
• Experience commissioning and troubleshooting VFDs.
• Familiarity with Studio 5000/RSLogix, FactoryTalk View, and AutoCAD.
• Ability to assist in project definition, specification, purchasing follow-through to installation.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills in software and hardware.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
• Job requires up to a maximum of 50% travel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience commissioning and troubleshooting servo drives.
• SQL Management experience.
• Understanding of computer networking concepts and architecture.
• Warehouse operations management experience or experience with warehouse management and/or execution systems.
